September 11th

I just finished laying out my plan for health reform at a joint session of Congress. Now, I'm writing directly to you because what happens next is critical -- and I need your help.

Change this big will not happen because I ask for it. It can only come when the nation demands it. Congress knows where I stand. Now they need to hear from you.

Add your voice: Ask your representatives to support my plan for real health reform in 2009.

The heart of my plan is simple: bring stability and security to Americans who already have health insurance, guarantee affordable coverage for those who don't, and rein in the cost of health care.

Tonight, I offered a specific plan for how to make it happen. I incorporated the best ideas from Democrats and Republicans to create a plan that's bold, practical, and represents the broad consensus of the American people.

We've come closer to real health reform in the last few months than we have in the last 60 years. But those who profit from the status quo -- and those who put partisan advantage above all else -- will fight us every inch of the way.

We do not seek that fight, but we will not shrink from it. The stakes are too high to let scare tactics cloud the debate, or to allow partisan bickering to block the path. Your voice, right now, is essential.

See my full plan and call on your representatives to support it:

http://my.barackobama.com/

SupportReform

Ours is not the first generation to understand the dire need for health reform. And I am not the first president to take up this cause, but I am determined to be the last.

Thank you,

President Barack Obama

Real 'Norma Rae' dies of cancer after insurer delayed treatment

crystal_lee_sutton.jpgThe North Carolina union organizer who was the inspiration for the movie "Norma Rae" died on Friday of brain cancer after a battle with her insurance company, which delayed her treatment. She was 68.

Crystal Lee Sutton, formerly Crystal Lee Jordan, was fired from her job folding towels at the J.P. Stevens textile plant in her hometown of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. for trying to organize a union in the early 1970s. Her last action at the plant -- writing the word "UNION" on a piece of cardboard and standing on her work table, leading her co-workers to turn off their machines in solidarity -- was memorialized in the 1979 film by actress Sally Field. The police physically removed Sutton from the plant for her action.

But her efforts ultimately succeeded, as the Amalgamated Clothing Workers won the right to represent the plant's employees on Aug. 28, 1974. Sutton later became a paid organizer for the union, which through a series of mergers became part of UNITE HERE before splitting off this year to form Workers United, which is affiliated with the Service Employees International Union.

Several years ago, Sutton was diagnosed with meningioma, a type of cancer of the nervous system. While such cancers are typically slow-growing, Sutton's was not -- and she went two months without potentially life-saving medication because her insurance wouldn't cover it initially. Sutton told the Burlington (N.C.) Times-News last year that the insurer's behavior was an example of abuse of the working poor:
"How in the world can it take so long to find out [whether they would cover the medicine or not] when it could be a matter of life or death," she said. "It is almost like, in a way, committing murder."
Though Sutton eventually received the medication, the cancer had already taken hold. She passed away on Friday, Sept. 11 in a Burlington, N.C. hospice.

Good jobs and a robust economy depend on investment.  While some may think that the information economy runs on ideas, we know that without investment in telecommunications infrastructure and employment the engine of that economy, the Internet, cannot function.
Later this week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will begin discussing how to preserve what's best about the Internet – the open flow of information and ideas.  We need to make sure that preserving jobs and investment is part of the discussion.
Click here to contact the FCC.
CWA members have worked to bring the Internet to everyone – by connecting homes and providing the customer service and back end support that are critical to day to day operations.  Through our Speed Matters project, we have led the way in calling for a plan to bring high-speed broadband access to all and restore the standing of the United States as an Internet leader.
But right now our country faces nearly 10 percent unemployment.  The FCC must approach regulation carefully to ensure that it does not have an adverse impact on jobs and job creation.  Otherwise, Americans in rural and other underserved areas of our country will be shut out of the benefits in communications, entertainment, telemedicine, education, and energy conservation that the Internet can bring.
Please contact the FCC today to let them know that you support policies to protect an open Internet that also promote job creation and continued private-sector investment in building high-speed Internet networks.

In 1973, Crystal Lee Sutton couldn't take it anymore. She turned off her machine, climbed onto her work table, wrote the word "UNION" on a big piece of cardboard, and raised it for    all to see.
Before the police could drag her away, she had brought her textile factory to   a standstill – and helped give her coworkers the courage to form a union.

Crystal Lee Sutton
Send an eCard to Congress   – tell them to honor the real "Norma Rae" by standing   up for workers.

Her story became the basis for the Oscar-winning 1979 movie, "Norma Rae."
Crystal Lee Sutton – the real "Norma Rae" – passed away just recently.
In her memory, will you send an    eCard to Congress asking them  to  pass the Employee Free Choice Act     in 2009?
Ms. Sutton's struggle as a mother of threeearning $2.65 an hour and working in appalling conditions led her to take a stand and help organize a union in her plant. Like countless workers who try to join a union today, she was met with threats, harassment, and was ultimately fired from her job.
The movie "Norma Rae" highlighted these issues 30 years ago. We've  waited far too long for real reform.
Tell Congress that America's     workers can't wait another three decades for a solution to the injustices outlined in "Norma Rae."
On Tuesday, President Obama said a stronger labor movement is the key     to a stronger middle class. "That's   why I'm standing behind the    Employee Free Choice Act," he said. "Because if a majority of workers   want a union,    they should get a union."
Congress must join President Obama  so we can create an economy that works for everyone again.
Send your card to Congress right      now – tell them to honor Ms. Sutton's memory by passing the Employee   Free Choice Act this year.
Together, we can restore the middle class and honor the brave men and women like like Crystal Lee Sutton  who have taken a stand for basic fairness and justice.
Thanks for all you do,
Liz, Manny, Jon, Elizabeth B. and the American Rights at Work team
P.S. We just came across a great   video about "Norma Rae" and  what the movie means for us today.

I was talking to a lobbyist a few days ago, and I asked him how many times he tried to meet with each of his target legislators. He immediately burst out laughing. Why? Because he tries to meet with each of them as many times as he can.
We need to do the same thing.
The health care bill that the Senate is considering would tax health care benefits.  If we are going to stop this tax, we must be relentless.
If you've written a letter or made a call to your senators already about why we need real health care reform that does not tax our benefits, we need you to write another one.
If you've written two letters about why we need real health care reform that does not tax our benefits, we need you to keep writing.
One letter is not enough. Two letters are not enough.
No matter how many letters you've written, we need you to write more.
Relentless. That's what the lobbyists are. Relentless in their pursuit of corporate interests. We must be relentless, too. We cannot stop. We cannot rest. We must continue to fight for fair reform. Write a letter today. Write a letter tomorrow. It is our time.
Without a relentless effort by every one of us, we won't win real health care reform that doesn't tax our benefits and that requires employers to pay their fair share.
Write a letter today. And get ready to write more letters and make more calls next week. We are contacting members in key states about calling their senators – be prepared to do it and get other CWA members to do it to.
Momentum is on our side, but the lobbyists for Big Business and the insurance companies aren't letting up.
We can and will win with your help.

P.S. It really does matter. We keep hearing from members of Congress about the letters they are receiving. Keep 'em coming. Write your senators today.

VERIZON ALERT
Verizon West continues to show their disdain for you at the bargaining table. Contracting out of good Union jobs and putting part of your hard earned salary at risk is their agenda.
I am sure that after them giving you DONUTS and showing you their $250,000 toy car in the Huntington Beach yard, they think you’re happy to see your wages and job security be destroyed by Corporate Greed!
I wonder how surprised they were when they saw the street lined with picket signs, and our fried The RAT (Ivan the terrible) on the same day?
We need to show this employer that we are MORE United than ever to get a fair contract!
Let them know every day & every way
NO CONTRACT, NO PEACE!!!

Don’t Believe Verizon’s Lies

Verizon has refused to meet with your Bargaining Committee! This childish, intentional snub demonstrates a HUGE lack of respect on Verizon’s behalf.

Despite Verizon’s behavior, your Bargaining Committee remains ready to bargain anywhere, anytime, to get you the contract you deserve.

By walking away from negotiations, Verizon is saying:

  • It wants to treat RWS employees like second class citizens.

  • It wants to introduce a Mandatory Sales Compensation Plan that puts large percentages of wages at risk.

  • It wants to be able to be able to use subcontractors at will, eroding your job security. Verizon has already contracted out bargaining unit work to Tijuana, Mexico, and is demanding the “flexibility” of UNLIMITED FIOS contracting!

Tell Verizon this is unacceptable! Join us for a demonstration outside the Slater yard on Thursday April 15th from 3pm – 6pm.

new

Dear CWA 9510,

I'm writing to you on a great day for America.

This morning, I gathered with members of Congress, my administration, and hardworking volunteers from every part of the country to sign comprehensive health care reform into law. Thanks to the immeasurable efforts of so many, the dream of reform is now a reality.

The bill I just signed puts Americans in charge of our own health care by enacting three key changes:

It establishes the toughest patient protections in history.

It guarantees all Americans affordable health insurance options, extending coverage to 32 million who are currently uninsured.

And it reduces the cost of care -- cutting over 1 trillion dollars from the federal deficit over the next two decades.

To ensure a successful, stable transition, many of these changes will phase into full effect over the next several years.

But for millions of Americans, many of the benefits of reform will begin this year -- some even taking effect this afternoon. Here are just a few examples:

Small businesses will receive significant tax cuts, this year, to help them afford health coverage for all their employees.

Seniors will receive a rebate to reduce drug costs not yet covered under Medicare.

Young people will be allowed coverage under their parents' plan until the age of 26.

Early retirees will receive help to reduce premium costs.

Children will be protected against discrimination on the basis of medical history.

Uninsured Americans with pre-existing conditions can join a special high-risk pool to get the coverage they need, starting in just 90 days.

Insured Americans will be protected from seeing their insurance revoked when they get sick, or facing restrictive annual limits on the care they receive.

All Americans will benefit from significant new investments to train primary care doctors, nurses, and public health professionals, and the creation of state-level consumer assistance programs to help all patients understand and defend our new rights.

As I've said many times, and as I know to be true, this astounding victory could not have been achieved without your tireless efforts.

So as we celebrate this great day, I want to invite you to add your name where it belongs: alongside mine as a co-signer of this historic legislation. Organizing for America will record the names of co-signers as a permanent commemoration of those who came together to make this moment possible -- all of you who refused to give up until the dream of many generations for affordable, quality care for all Americans was finally fulfilled.

So, if you haven't yet, please add your name as a proud health care reform co-signer today:

http://my.barackobama.com/cosigner

Please accept my thanks for your voice, for your courage, and for your indispensable partnership in the great work of creating change.

History, and I, are in your debt.

President Barack Obama

CWA Members Vote Strike Authorization at Verizon California, Inc.

Santa Fe Springs, March 19 – Members of the Communications Workers of America working at Verizon California voted overwhelmingly to give CWA leaders authorization to call a strike if a fair contract cannot be reached.

If a strike is called, about 5,500 Verizon workers, almost all of whom work in Southern California will walk off the job, affecting land line telephone operations throughout the greater Los Angeles area.

The existing union contract expired on March 13th, and employees are now working under a contract extension.  Negotiations are still underway on behalf of CWA-represented workers, with disagreement over health care premiums and a proposed mandatory sales commission program that the union believes would be bad for workers and consumers.

Also at issue is Verizon’s transfer of work out of California.  In the course of these negotiations, Verizon sent jobs performed by union members in Oxnard to Tijuana

“The strike authorization vote demonstrates members’ solid support for their bargaining team and their strong determination to achieve a fair settlement with Verizon,” said District Vice President Jim Weitkamp.  “Verizon can well afford to treat its workers fairly.”

Authorization Vote!

In bargaining, Verizon has shown their true agenda. They make money, they want more, and they intend to take it from YOU.

They want you to pay over $1k per year in health care premiums.

They want an unlimited increase in contractors and decrease your union jobs.

They want to put your salary at risk based on whether you sell or not.

They have not even responded to rolling BSW into the core agreement proposal.

THEY left the bargaining table.

There will be a strike authorization vote and    mobilization on 3-18
5:30-7:30 AM @ the Lower parking lot in the Slater Yard.

It is time to put up a fight,

Be there an hour before your shift.

And let's rededicate ourselves to ensuring that every eligible American -- regardless of class, color, or creed -- can cast a ballot and have it counted."

Our hearts go out to the victims of yesterday's earthquake in Haiti. Here are two progressive ways you can make a difference today.

How you can help:
1. Give to Doctors Without Borders
2. Tell Obama: Stop the forcible deportation of Haitians

hgirl

1

Give to Doctors Without Borders / Medicins Sans Frontieres.

Doctors Without Borders — a group CREDO members support with their phone bills — operates one of the only free trauma centers in Port-au-Prince as well as an emergency hospital in the capital for pregnant women, new mothers, and newborn children. All three of its primary medical centers have collapsed, but DWB/MSF has already set up temporary shelters and is offering emergency care on the ground. For more info on their work in Haiti click here. To make a donation click here.

2

Tell Obama: Grant Temporary Protected Status to Haitians living in the U.S
President Obama has ordered his Department of Homeland Security to temporarily halt all forcible deportations to the disaster zone, but this falls far short of what human rights groups are asking for. He must immediately grant Temporary Protected Status to undocumented Haitian refugees in the U.S. Refugees from El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Somalia and Sudan are afforded this status. To refuse to do so for Haitians would be irresponsible and immoral. To take action, click here.

CWA Members -

Your immediate help is needed. If we can put aside our differences on healthcare and taxes for a moment, we can see that we have the ability to help those less fortunate than ourselves.

Please help now. Thousands are in desperate need of immediate medical attention.

Together, we can save lives.

Thank you for taking action today on behalf of the people of Haiti.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce

Before their board members meet with President Obama tomorrow, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is asking people how to create jobs.
Can you tell them we need:
good jobs,
green jobs,
and union jobs!

Post a message on their Facebook page!
Don't use Facebook? Take action here.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has spent tens of millions of dollars to spread lies about unions, deny climate change, and block health insurance reform.
Tomorrow, the White House is holding a "jobs summit." And representatives from companies on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce board will be there.
This is a big moment in our campaign to hold the U.S. Chamber of Commerce accountable. The Chamber has asked the public to submit ideas on how to create 20 million jobs over the next decade. But they haven't said a word about making sure these are good jobs, green jobs, and, if the workers want a union, union jobs.
Can you take a minute to give the Chamber a piece of your mind about how to create sustainable jobs with fair wages that will help bring our economy into the 21st century? Here's how:

Your own words are the most powerful, but here's what I plan to post – and you can feel free to use it or make it your own:

  • We need to make our economic system work for the middle class again. Even if leveling the playing field means that record-high corporate profits are lower in the short-term, it will be better for business in the long run, because it will create more middle-class consumers.
  • Legislation like the Employee Free Choice Act is a critical part of fixing our economy. We need to make sure more families enter and stay in the middle class.
  • Green jobs and green industries are critical to growing our economy over the next decade. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce can help by supporting policies that create green jobs, including the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act.

Our campaign is working, and the Chamber is on the defensive. Over 24,000 people and more than 3,000 small business owners have signed our "Not My Chamber" pledge, and our Twitter "flash mob" led to one of the top-performing Twitter petitions EVER.
Let's keep up the pressure before and during tomorrow's big meeting.
Sincerely,
– Manny

VERIZON MEMBERS!

MOBILIZATION ALERT!

Insanity Spreading Among Verizon Management Faster Than Swine Flu

This Rumor IS True!

Verizon did in fact foolishly refuse to meet with your entire elected CWA bargaining committee because they were wearing CWA caps. This insane show of disrepect is a test of our resolve.

Verizon has just let me know that they intend to not meet with your elected bargaining committee if Local 9586 resident Gregg Gibson is wearing a CWA (or any other type of cap). This is silly, stupid, childish and surreal, but this is their stated intention.

The entire bargaining committee will be wearing CWA caps for tomorrow's meeting and we will see what happens. In the meantime, you all now have one of the easiest solidarity ever given you going into next year's negotiations. By the end of the week we should have well over 50 % of our members wearing caps every day; by next Wednesday It should be as close to 100% as it ever will be.

Ball caps are easy to find and they are cheap; let me know if you need help. You cannot allow the company to get by with the single most arrogant directive that I have seen in my 32 years of the movement.

They actually believe they can use this to intimidate all their employees; I think I have never seen hubris like this in my life. If we do this one simple task right over the next two to three weeks we can force them to come to me with their hats in hand (pun intended)

You can make this happen; I can't do it without you. Please give me the power to teach these corporate mindless swine a lesson.

What’s happening  at Verizon?

  • ISP offers
  • Pending layoffs
  • Entire departments closing
  • Jobs leaving California
  • Arrogant disrespect for  us and our elected Bargaining Committee

What are we going  to do about it?
We’re Hanging Our Hats on Mobilization

Our solidarity and determination can and will overcome management’s disregard for us as employees and working people.

With bargaining just a few months away, we need to remind Verizon management that we are united all across the bargaining unit.  We demand a fair contract, lawful and reasonable conduct at the bargaining table, and respect for us and for the bargaining process.

Put your hat on at
2:00 p.m. exactly
Thursday, November 5

If you are threatened with discipline, take off the hat. Don’t surrender it to management.
Put it on your desk as a reminder that you’re a party to this action.

September 10th

“Even if you’re not a union member, every American owes something to America’s labor movement.”
President Barack Obama, Labor Day 2009

Dear Sisters and Brothers:

Labor Day 2009 begins a new season for working families.  For us, our calling is to serve workers and build our union and our movement.  For CWA, this is a critical time, a turning point possibly like no other in our history.

As we all predicted, bargaining in the U.S. is like never before. Unemployment is near 10 percent and counting, under employment 20 percent.   Earned income is down 4 percent for the last 12 months.  Deflation of .66 percent has replaced inflation, meaning that a 3 percent wage increase is equivalent to 3.66 in real terms.  All of this is unprecedented.

But, of course, for us bargaining rates in the private sector of 7 percent and our own membership falling by 20,000 this year are more important numbers.  As the President has also said “Change we can believe in,” and we have to lead it like never before.

We can play defense and offense at the same time, but we need to make the connection or we will not keep hope alive.  We must link our bargaining and organizing to broaden change as well as defend the benefits and living standards we have fought to have for generations.  We can defend our jobs but also understand the need to bring CWA and bargaining rights to our major employers and industries.  We can bargain the best health care benefits possible and link that bargaining to a commitment that in the next few months, we can help lead the U.S. to join every other democracy with broad-based health care where every employer must play or pay.

For now, health care is center stage and rightly so.  Health care cost escalation has led most employers to dump all retiree health care and cut back on benefits for actives.  Tonight, President Obama will address this, but we will need to dig in and fight for our core principles like never before or we could end up worse than when we started.  In particular, we will need to fight taxing of our benefits or plans, and fight for the employer mandate as the way to pay for health care for all.

At the same time, we must stay focused on Employee Free Choice—no one else will!  The Chamber will fight this in the months ahead just as they will fight against health care reform and financial regulation.   The Chamber and U.S. management have no trouble doing more than one thing at a time.

Today there is a key hearing in Massachusetts to amend the state’s election law so the Governor can appoint an interim senator, as Senator Kennedy wished, until the special election in early 2010.  CWA will have 50 activists in that auditorium, helping to fill it and put the electeds on notice that we cannot wait for real health care reform or Free Choice.  Without the key 60th Democratic senator we cannot get cloture for Free Choice or most likely real health care reform.  However, with the 60th D, we have better than average odds to enact the first major positive change in the NLRA since enactment almost 75 years ago.  October to early December will be the key time in the Senate and we will need to mobilize, with your leadership, like never before.

Many of you have been involved in critical bargaining and know first hand what bargaining is like in 2009 as every employer uses the economy to explain why they must cut, ignoring the consequences that continuing cuts contribute to a worse recession.    I realize that you are on the front lines whether bargaining at AT&T or any employer, or any of the other aspects of representing our members every day.

In two weeks our Executive Board will be meeting here—recommitting to the big fights for health care reform and Free Choice as well as organizing, electoral work in key states like New Jersey and Virginia with gubernatorial races and the legislature on the line, as well as key issues internally like dealing with our finances and the structure of our union.  Next week, the AFL -CIO will meet in Pittsburgh and elect Rich Trumka as president and other new officers.  CWA will be there committed to labor unity and health care and Free Choice.

But none of this is possible or even hopeful without you leading the way.  As the President said on Labor Day, we need to be “Fired Up and Ready to Go.”  We need that spirit in every local even in these toughest of times.  I am more convinced than ever that together we will make a significant difference in the critical months ahead.

In Solidarity,

Larry Cohen
President
